Alex (Abigail's preferred name) is quite possibly one of the most remarkable young adults I have ever come across. I have been teaching high school for 15 years, so I've known literally thousands of high schoolers in my career, but very very few have impressed me with their level of responsibility, integrity, patience, and awareness of the world around them as Alex has. She babysat for my 3 children (currently ages 2, 4, & 6) for 3 years before she graduated and left for college. In that time, I have gotten to know Alex as someone I would trust with my children and their wellbeing as wholly as myself or my husband. Alex is driven and confident, attentive and level-headed, creative, imaginative, and reliable. She not only plays games, tells stories, and sets up activities that my kids love, but she also cleans up any messes made with the kids and tidies the main spaces after the kids go to bed (a parent's dream!). But one of the most remarkable things to me is how she helps my kids. Without needing my own instructions, she parents my kids the way I would have when they act out. When my oldest daughter gets mad or frustrated or jealous, she often explodes and is out of control. Alex retains her calm demeanor and validates my daughter's feelings while maintaining boundaries and acceptable reactions, using phrases like, "it's okay to feel mad that your sister took your toy, but it's not okay to hit her. I'm going to be with you while you calm down and we can solve this problem together." There have been times when I have found myself as the parent learning better ways to solve disputes from Alex! She is really an incredible human and I can't recommend her strongly enough for any family looking for another role model and caretaker for their kiddos.
