After almost a decade of teaching, I've realized that kids can be pretty mean... to themselves. Often, they have trouble playing piano because they immediately think "it sounds bad." They don't give themselves a chance before rendering a negative judgement. Even if they actually play something cool, they can't recognize it. Listening, asking questions, and thinking simultaneously build kids' musical understanding, creativity, and confidence - by turning down their inner critic so they can actually process the art they're creating.
